School Rules 1962

SCHOOL RULES

These arise from the work of a committee of masters. Most are, or should be, self-evident.

Anti-social activities broadly fall into two categories, omissions and commissions. The first group might show lack of good breeding, the second might arise from thoughtlessness, being mischievous or, in extreme cases, delinquent tendencies. If every boy, at all times and in all places, conformed closely to the usages of polite society, very few  rules would be needed. The reputation of the school depends on the courtesy, goods manners, and sense of responsibility of the least satisfactory member of it.

All boys are expected:-

  1. To behave quietly when travelling in public service vehicles.
  2. To offer seats to adult passengers when these would, otherwise, have to stand.
  3. To raise caps and to exchange spoken greetings when passing in the streets masters or any adults known to them.
  4. Not to eat when walking through the streets.
  5. To stand when masters or other adults have occasion to visit classrooms.
  6. To be seated with books ready for use when masters are delayed at the start of a period.
  7. To stand in silence until grace has been said at lunchtime.
  8. To be silent when approaching, in or leaving the assembly hall.
  9. To move quietly between classrooms.

Boys must:-

10. WALK along the left-hand side of corridors and obey instructions “up traffic only”, “down traffic only” etc.

11. NOT ride bicycles down these roads: Mill Gap Road, St Anne’s Road, Selwyn Road, Watts Lane. Prefects and Sub-Prefects are exempted from this prohibition.

12. NOT ride bicycles, motorcycles or motor-assisted cycles anywhere in the grounds of any school at any time. At the new school all boys must mount and dismount in King’s Drive. They may not ride along the concrete road leading to the school.

13. NOT visit the cycle sheds at any time apart from 8.30-8.40 a.m., 12.30-12.40 p.m., 1.35-1.45 p.m., 3.45-3.55 p. m. unless they have prior permission from the headmaster or second master on each occasion.

14. NOT use any rack other than that allocated to them.

15. NOT return to school before 1.35 p.m. if they go home to lunch, unless their presence is needed for some official school activity.

16. NOT, if they stay at school for lunch, and are taught in the same building on both morning and afternoon, leave the premises except by permission of the duty master. Permission must be sought afresh on every occasion.

17. IF they are at the old school and have reason to leave school on official business during school hours, sign the book in the office immediately before leaving and immediately upon their return. At the new school they must report to the masters teaching their form upon leaving and after their return.

18. NOT to open any desk other than that allocated to them.

19. NOT to commit the criminal offence of having in their possession articles belonging to another boy without the knowledge and consent of that other.

20. NOT to have at school any books other than those needed for the current day’s work.

21. NOT leave money or valuables where they can be stolen. At the old school these should be handed in to the office for safe keeping. At the new school a master should be asked to safeguard them. The school cannot accept any responsibility for losses.

22. HAVE all items of clothing, including shoes and plimsolls, marked clearly with their name.

23. WEAR school uniform, including caps, when travelling to and from school and on all school occasions.

24. NOT smoke, whether with or without their parents’ consent, in any school field or premises or in any public place.

25. NOT damage, deface or misuse any buildings, furniture, fabric, books or articles of equipment.

26. NOT climb trees, buildings, walls or roofs anywhere on the school premises.

27. NOT leave litter inside or outside anywhere on school premises.

28. NOT, on dry days, be inside the buildings at break or during the lunch hour without the permission of the duty master.

At the new school:-

29. ENTER and leave the building only by the present main entrance.

30. CHANGE into plimsolls immediately upon entering, place outdoor shoes in the wire locker allocated to them and NEVER move about in any part of the building other than the entrance hall except when wearing plimsolls.

31. NOT in any circumstances go beyond the left-hand side of the entrance or anywhere outside the school except on the concrete path or the playing field.

32. IF taking lunch, change, in wet weather, into outdoor shoes before going to the canteen, then, at the canteen, change once more into plimsolls before entering there. In dry weather the journey to or from the canteen may be made wearing plimsolls.

33. CHANGE into outdoor shoes if they wish to use the field during the lunch hour during the Michaelmas and Lent Terms. Permission to use the field must first be sought from the duty master.

34. NOT enter classrooms, division rooms, the demonstration room, the drawing offices or the library before morning registration, first period, during break, before fourth period, at lunch time, before sixth period or after eighth period unless a master is present. They must line up outside the rooms concerned.

35. NOT enter any laboratory or the gymnasium at any time unless a master is present.

36. REMEMBER that the prefects and sub-prefects have the duty helping the headmaster and masters to check attempted violations of school rules. Their authority is derived from the headmaster. Disobedience to their instructions is regarded as seriously as would be defiance of his orders. There must, moreover, be no argument whatever in carrying out their orders.
